Albert Kangogo and Gladys Chesir won the 5th Safaricom Iten Road Race
Spills and drills rocked the action packed home of champions Iten during the 10 km road race that took place in Iten on Saturday 8th August 2015. The thrilling event that attracted hundreds of funs along the streets of Iten was sponsored by the Kenyan leading telecommunication and mobile service provider Safaricom.
Chesir, who was recently named by the Athletics Kenya to the team that is heading to Congo Brazzaville, for the IAAF All Africa Games, after becoming fourth in the Kenya National trials said that she was using the event as a training-work out in preparation for the All Africa Games. She clocked 34:41.25 (minutes) to win the competitive women 10k race in style while Gladys Yator 35:08.28 (minutes) struggling to close Cheshir’s gab in vain forcing her to settle for second position. Viola Chelagat 35:52.10 (minutes) finished third while Gladys kimaina 36:01.28 (minutes) came fourth ahead of Eunice Chepkorir 36:04.89 (minutes) and Sheila Chebet 36:05.70 (minutes) in positions five and six in that order.
Gladys Chemaiyo finished seventh clocking 36:13.22 (minutes) ahead if Valarie Aiyabei 36:33.23 (minutes), Lena Rotich 36:50.47 (minutes) and Caroline Chepkosgei 36:53.39 (minutes).
“To me the race was fairly competitive and thought I did not actually prepare for it an glad that I came top. I just decided yesterday that instead of going for a long run then why not try ran her. I was just using it to prepare myself ahead of the Africa Games that I will be running next month in Cong.” Said Chesir
In men’s category, Albert Kangogo, took an early lead getting the streets of Iten on their feet for a standing ovation, winning the thrilling and absurd category by clocking 30:00.04 (minutes) closely followed by Wilfred Kimitei, (30:04.04) minutes in second place while James Barmaasai 30:08.04 (minutes) to close the podium.
Festus Kangogo 30:20.09 (minutes) came distantly fourth trailing Emmanuel Bor, 30:23.04 (minutes), Ben Chelanga 30:28.07 (minutes), Festus Talam 30:37.02 (minutes), Kenneth Keter 30:40.07 (minutes), Hillary Chirchir 30:48.05 (minutes) and Timothy Kimelly 30:52.07 (minutes) in fifth to tenth positions respectively.
