In short, ‘yes’!

I have been hearing about this topic all summer, and seems to me that the more elite runners are mostly the ones that might be able to do this for longer stretches, but for most of us, it’s more theoretical than applicable. I remember a drill when I played football where the coach would tie your ankles together with a ‘hobble strap’ no longer than 18-24 inches. Then you try to run sprints. Of course the first few you fall flat on your face. But then you adapt- the object being to ‘manually’ shorten your stride in order to generate higher RPM’s and get to point B faster. Of course, when you watch the Olympic sprinter from Jamaica with the humongous stride, it blows the ‘quickest method from point A to point B’ theory out of the water. Several runners I know do strive to alter their gait in order to quicken or shorten the gait cycle, thus the foot comes back into contact with the ground more quickly, “for higher RPM’s” , and in so trying to keep your balance, biomechanically the heel simply is now too far under the body to be able to strike the ground, as it would with a longer stride or gait. Therefore, you’re going to land on the forefoot more! I’m not exactly sure why they want to attain this for distance running but I’m sure you could find lots of theories on the other running boards and blogs!!
