Ethiopian runner jailed on murder charges

Arega Abraha, an Ethiopian runner who has won scores of races in the Atlanta area over the last 15 years, was arrested earlier this month and charged with murder.

Abraha, a former winner of the Atlanta Marathon, reportedly was involved in a marriage arrangement scheme involving 28-year-old Aster Haile, his female cousin. When Haile balked at the age of the older man that Abraha wanted her to marry, police allege that Abraha shot her in the head and left her dead alongside an Atlanta highway.

Police said they believe Abraha was to receive money for the arrangement and became angry when it turned sour. Abraha was arrested last week at the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Airport on a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He is in a Boone County, Kentucky, jail awaiting a court hearing.

Abraha left his native Ethiopia in 1977 and moved to Atlanta in 1981. He was well known in the running community there and was a frequent winner of local races. Said Atlanta Track Club director Julia Emmons: "He was a national-level athlete and we were pleased that he ran a great many local races...He was always extremely pleasant, somewhat shy. He'd run, win the race, pick up his trophy and go home."
